The Benefits of 24-hour Dispatch

The freedom of the road is a wonderful experience, and then there are pickups and deliveries to be done. It would seem work at that time is all in the fast lane, and calling dispatch to report in tends to be a hassle. Getting through a day of deliveries or fighting traffic to arrive before a business closes can be times when calling dispatch later is for the best. Many companies have dispatchers that go home at the end of the business day, but being able to call at any time can be beneficial. When a breakdown or accident occurs, when a late delivery or pickup needs extra attention, or even when calling later to get more work done is necessary, a 24-hour dispatch is an additional tool to assist drivers to get the job done.

Business Hours

The majority of businesses have a stated amount of hours they are open for business, and they may not accept deliveries after they have closed for the day. Working in a big city generally means making several different stops, and business hours are precious for drivers. Being able to put off stopping long enough to call dispatch until the day’s work is done can make it easier for drivers to be ready to head for the next city down the line. They can fuel up and have dinner at the local truck stop, and then they can take the time they need to call in for the day.

Late Delivery Issues

There are times when a business would rather receive a shipment after they have closed for the day, but late delivery issues can arise. The shipper might not have included everything the customer needs, or the supervisor at the delivery site could have a shipment they want to load onto the truck. Calling dispatch when these types of issues happen after the normal business hours can keep a driver able to make their delivery and head for their next stop or get authorization for a pickup without waiting until the next business day.

Accidents Happen

Driving during any part of the day or night can be hazardous, and accidents happen that can make the next day’s deliveries late. Breakdowns after normal business hours are also a possibility. Letting dispatch know immediately is always important, so waiting until the next morning to report them is not always the most efficient solution for drivers or the company. Being able to contact dispatchers at any time of day or night makes getting the paperwork done faster and easier, and it can be a welcome voice on the other end to help ease the situation.

Life and work do not stop at the end of a normal business day when drivers are out on the road, and dispatch should be there when needed. Even if it is just a check-in call for location or letting them know what deliveries and pickups have been made, knowing someone will answer the phone any time of day can make a driver’s job easier and safer.
